The Campaign for Labour Party Democracy (CLPD) has been fighting for more power for Labour’s members and affiliates since 1973. They needed a new website that could act as a hub for all their campaigning activity from news, briefings and events to encouraging membership, newsletter signups and donation.
Features
- Multiple custom templates for different types of content
- Logo and brand refresh
- Custom icon design to reduce the need for photography
A fresh CLPD logo
The first step was to bring the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy branding up to date. They were keen to keep some of the existing identifiers, namely their red yellow and black colour scheme and their four ball logo style, because at this stage they are fairly well established.
For the colour scheme we made some adjustments so that the tones worked better in combination and in more contexts. We also did some test to make sure the new scheme was accessible. In addition to this we reworked their logo to make it feel more modern, creating a series of layout options and colour combinations to ensure CLPD had suitable options for all scenarios.
Custom icons for visual interest
Campaign for Labour Party Democracy made it clear from the start that sourcing high quality photography for the site was always going to be a challenge. This meant that one of the key challenges was how to make the site design visually interesting without it being reliant on imagery.
To get around this problem we decided to create a suite of custom icons that could denote the different areas and types of content across the site. Not only would they help users to identify content types at a glance, but they would also add a visual element that the design could be built around.
Lots of content types
Campaign for Labour Party Democracy produce a lot of content all with different functions and audiences. In order to build a successful site we needed to do three things. Firstly, we analysed those content types, who they were aimed at and where they might sit in a hierarchy of content. Secondly, we wire-framed a site structure which allowed users to access these different content types in as seamless a way as possible, without being overwhelmed by choice. Thirdly, we gave identity to these different site sections through the use of iconography and, in some cases, variation of colour scheme so that it was always clear where a user was on the site.
