The Parliamentary Network on the World Bank & International Monetary Fund (the Parliamentary Network) provides a platform for parliamentarians from over 140 countries to advocate for increased accountability and transparency in International Financial Institutions and multilateral development financing. They approached The Space Room to redesign and build a new platform to help them communicate their work more effectively.

Building a professional, useable platform
The main goal of the platform was to act as a hub for different parliamentarians to share ideas, news, videos and publications and convene through events.
With this in mind, first and foremost the site design needed to be clean, easily navigable, responsive, accessible and professional for the user. For the administrators it needed to be as easy as possible to add and edit content without the need for technical knowledge.
We built the site in WordPress using custom interfaces to make working on the site as intuitive as possible, whilst also meaning that there was plenty of scope for future developments if and when required.
Readability, clarity and functionality
The four main content areas of The Parliamentary Network platform, articles, events, videos and publications all have different potential audiences and functional requirements. We gave each content type its own distinct home on the site, it's own identity through the use of colour and iconography and it's own specific functionality. This ensured that it was as easy as possible to both add content for the administrators and find content for the users.
Accommodating a wide range of contributors
The Parliamentary Network consists of parliamentarians and stakeholders from over 140 different countries and needs to be able to accommodate contributions from all as required.
The new site allows for submissions through a front end form which automatically creates a draft post in the backend. This post can then be reviewed by a member of the core team and put live if and when appropriate.
The front end style will then display the post, assigned to the correct author, whether they are internal or external to the Parliamentary Network admin team.
Flexibility built in for different scenarios
One of our goals here when building any site, is to provide the client with the flexibility to easily add content without worrying about compromising the integrity of the site design. For example, we wanted the site to utilise rich imagery when that was available, but not be bound to that aesthetic when photography was harder to come by. With that in mind the editor has three options for the header area of any post type: no header image, thumbnail header image or banner header image. Depending on the choice they make the front end style will adjust to accommodate it and, as a result, will always look neat and professional.
